Winter Portrait Series: People
Some of the most incredible individual and family portraits in my portfolio were taken during the Montana winter. There is something so beautiful about the muted background colors and blankets of snow, bringing the subjects to center stage!
Shooting in the snow can be an opportunity for unique, gorgeous photos. The resulting portraits can have an almost magical feel to them. Look for a background that has trees, water (a river or lake), or foilage to add visual interest and depth.
When planning your wardrobe for a winter shoot, layers are your best friend! Layer with sweaters, vests, scarves, and jackets. Bring along a blanket to wrap around everyone - or to use as a barrier between you and the snow if taking photos while posed on the ground.
Tips for capturing beautiful winter portraits:
Adjust the exposure (increase by one stop) when shooting in the snow so your image doesn't look too gray.
Create contrast in your photos so the snow does not wash out the subjects.
Dress warm and wear appropriate head, hand and footwear so you don't get chilled during the session. Hand and feet warmers are a great idea!
Pay attention to lighting! Even during an overcast day there are certain angles where the lighting is best. Portraits taken early in the morning or an hour before sunset have the softest light.
Look for color - if the weather is right, you can catch the sun rays shining through the trees. If the sun isn't shining, try to incorporate some evergreen trees and foilage into the background.
After the shoot, grab a mug of hot chocolate or coffee to warm up! Winter is an incredible time of year for beautiful family portraits. If you have questions or would like to schedule a winter portrait session for your family, contact Shannon today.
