Session Guide
Capturing the heart of your best friend.
Welcome! I'm Shannon.
With a lifelong bond with dogs, I understand the deep connection they hold as family. I aim to capture your dog's beauty and personality whether they're at play, interacting with you, or showing off their quirks.
Sessions are stress-free and enjoyable, resulting in stunning images for your home. Let me tell your dog's unique story through breathtaking photography.

Preparing for your dog's portrait session
Session preparation guide
The most beautiful portraits happen when your dog feels relaxed, comfortable, and free to be themselves. This guide will help you prepare for a smooth, enjoyable session so we can capture images full of personality, connection, and heart.

Plan ahead
Our pre-session consultation is the perfect time to share your vision, preferences, and any special touches you’d love to include. If your dog has behavioral quirks, reactivity, or anxiety, don’t worry—please let me know! We’ll choose a location and pace that sets your dog up for success.
What to wear
If you plan to be in some portraits with your dog, wear clothing that complements their coloring and avoids busy patterns. Neutral or jewel tones work beautifully in natural light and help keep the focus on your bond. Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Grooming tips
Give your pup a bath and groom a day or two before the session (not the same day—it can be tiring). A clean coat and trimmed nails make a big difference in how your dog photographs, and they’ll feel their best, too.
Collars and accessories
Please remove any hanging ID tags from your dog’s collar—they tend to catch the light in distracting ways. I’ll take care of removing leashes in post-processing.
Feel free to dress up your pup with a stylish collar, bow tie, or bandana! However, unless necessary for safety, please avoid harnesses—they can be bulky and distracting in photos (and will not be edited out).

What to bring
-
Favorite treats (especially if they have allergies or special preferences)
-
A water bottle and bowl
-
Their favorite toy, ball, or frisbee for playtime portraits
I’ll bring treats and supplies too, but a few familiar items can help your dog feel right at home.
Arrival Time
Arrive 5–10 minutes early to give your dog a chance to settle in, explore, and shake off any extra energy. If your dog is older, be sure they’re well-rested beforehand so we can keep things calm and comfortable.

Be ready to assist
You’ll play an important part in the session! I’ll guide you on how to help direct your dog’s attention or get those priceless expressions. Your voice and energy are the magic ingredients to making the session fun and engaging for your pup.
Trust the process
Don’t worry if your dog isn’t perfectly behaved—most aren’t, and that’s totally okay! I have years of experience photographing dogs of all temperaments. My goal is to create a stress-free experience that brings out the very best in your pup. You focus on enjoying the moment—I’ll take care of the rest.

By following these simple tips, we’ll set the stage for a session full of joyful moments, meaningful connection, and portraits you’ll treasure for a lifetime.

The big day
It's finally here–your dog's time to shine!
Let's create something beautiful together
Thank you for trusting me with your dog’s story. I know how deeply you love them—and how important it is to capture their spirit in a way that feels true, timeless, and full of heart.
This guide was created to help you feel prepared, supported, and excited for our time together. Whether we’re chasing golden light in the hills or capturing quiet moments of connection, I’ll be right there with you—camera in hand, ready to create something meaningful.
If you have any questions along the way, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m here to make this experience joyful, easy, and unforgettable.
I can’t wait to meet you and your pup!

No Special Training Needed
Beautiful portraits—no obedience skills required!
Your dog doesn’t need to be perfectly trained to have a successful session. In fact, most of the dogs you see in my portfolio are everyday companions—not show dogs or obedience champs. Whether your pup is full of energy, shy, or somewhere in between, I’ve got it covered!
-
My camera is fast enough to catch even the wiggliest pups in action
-
I don’t expect your dog to sit, stay, or pose perfectly
-
All behavior quirks or challenges are discussed during your planning call so I can choose the most comfortable and safe location for your dog
For nervous or reactive dogs, we’ll take extra care. I always use positive reinforcement and spend as much time as needed to help your pup feel comfortable with me and my camera.

Safety First (Always!)
Your dog’s well-being is my #1 priority during our session. Here’s how we keep things safe while still capturing beautiful images:
-
I provide a thin, lightweight slip leash (which I’ll edit out in final images)
-
I prefer to photograph pets without collars, unless they’re decorative, fancy, or just too cute (like a bowtie!)
-
Please bring a regular leash and collar as backup, especially if your pup is a runner or we’re in an open area
-
Harnesses won’t be edited out, so I recommend avoiding them unless absolutely necessary
Don’t worry—I’ll guide you through everything, and we’ll work at your dog’s pace to make the session fun, relaxed, and full of tail wags!
What to expect at your dog's portrait session

When we meet for your portrait session, we’ll ease into things at your dog’s pace. I’ll spend a few minutes getting to know your pup and letting them check me out—often with the help of a few delicious treats (unless we’re avoiding them for health reasons). Before you know it, I’ll be your dog’s new best friend with a camera.

Every dog is different, and I always honor your dog’s unique needs and personality. If your pup is shy or a little unsure around strangers, I’ll give them space and let them warm up naturally while we chat. No pressure, no rush.

If your dog is more on the energetic side (hello, zoomies!), it’s completely normal for them to be excited about being in a new environment. That’s why I recommend arriving about 10 minutes early. This gives your dog time to sniff around, get used to the surroundings, and settle in before we start photographing.

Before we dive into the session, I’ll go over a few quick tips—like the best way to hold the leash to make editing a breeze. I’ll also let you know how you can help, whether that’s calling your dog’s name, giving cues to sit or stay, or simply being nearby for encouragement.

And don’t worry—your dog doesn’t have to be perfectly trained! I’ve worked with dogs of all ages, energy levels, and training backgrounds. My sessions are relaxed, patient, and tailored to meet your dog where they are, so we can create natural, expressive images that reflect who they truly are.

Capturing moments with you and your dog
Creating meaningful portraits while making memories together

Think of your session as a relaxed, joy-filled outing with your dog—with me along to document all the beautiful moments. As we walk and explore together, I’ll be keeping an eye out for the best light and most interesting backdrops—natural textures like rocks, logs, and trees, or charming buildings, fences, and pops of color. I know how to spot the perfect places to make your dog (and you!) look amazing.

We’ll capture a wide variety of images during our time together. I usually begin with a few casual shots—maybe of your dog on the trail or a few of you together—to help them settle in and get used to the rhythm of the session. Then, we’ll take advantage of your pup’s early-session energy for some action shots. These playful moments are not only fun, they also help burn off some excitement and set the stage for more relaxed portraits later on.

Your dog doesn’t need to be perfectly trained—we work with their natural rhythm. If sitting isn’t in the cards, that’s okay! We’ll capture them standing, sniffing, or simply being themselves. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s authenticity.

Remember, this is your time, too. Let go of expectations and enjoy the experience. I’ve got it all under control, and I’ll gently guide things along while you focus on being present with your pup. Our mission is simple: to capture your dog’s one-of-a-kind personality and the beautiful bond you share.

You may hear some strange sounds from me—I’ve got a bag full of noisemakers and tricks up my sleeve to get those expressive head tilts! I’ll also rely on you for a little help—whether it’s calling their name, tossing a toy, or doing a little silly dance. After all, no one knows your dog like you do.

I can’t wait to create something truly special with you and your best friend. Let’s make some magic—and memories—you’ll treasure forever.
Your role during the session
Teamwork makes the magic happen!

During your session, you’ll play an important part in helping things run smoothly—and making your dog feel relaxed and engaged. I’ll guide you throughout, asking you to assist in small ways, like:
-
Holding the leash in a specific way (to make editing easier)
-
Tossing a favorite toy or ball
-
Standing just behind me and being a little silly to get those perfect head tilts and expressions

Your dog knows and trusts you best, so your presence and encouragement are incredibly helpful—and often result in the most natural, joyful images.

I also hope you’ll choose to be in a few portraits with your pup. You don’t have to be perfectly posed or dressed to the nines—what matters is capturing the connection you share. These heartfelt images make stunning wall art, framed prints, or additions to an heirloom album.

One day, these won’t just be portraits—they’ll be part of your family’s story. And I promise, you’ll never regret stepping into the frame.
Wrapping up the portrait session
What happens after the last click?

By the end of our session, we’ll have created a beautiful variety of images—and chances are, your dog will be happily tired! It’s hard work being a model: following cues, holding still, and staying focused takes a lot of mental energy (and treats!).

Before we part ways, I’ll walk you through what happens next. I’ll share when you can expect to see your professionally edited proofs and answer any questions you may have. I’ll also be happy to show you a few sample products—like wall art and albums—so you can begin imagining how your portraits might live in your home.

Then you can relax while I get to work behind the scenes, carefully selecting the best images and applying my signature editing style to bring out the very best in your dog and the story we’ve just captured.

The result? A collection of meaningful, heartfelt images you’ll be proud to display and cherish for years to come.

After the portrait session
What to expect after our time together
Once our session wraps up, the real magic begins behind the scenes.
I’ll carefully review all the images and select the very best—the ones that truly capture your dog’s personality, expressions, and the special moments we shared. Then, I’ll begin the custom editing process to transform those moments into polished, heartfelt artwork.
Custom editing
Here's what custom editing includes:
-
Removing leashes and distracting background elements
-
Cleaning up eye goop, drool, or debris (hey, it happens!)
-
Correcting any color casts from the environment
-
Softening or enhancing light and shadow for balance
-
General color grading to create a cohesive, timeless look
-
Bringing out detail and sparkle in your dog’s eyes
-
And all the little touch-ups that elevate your images from great to unforgettable
Each image is edited with care and intention—because your dog’s story deserves to be told beautifully.
Once your gallery is ready, we’ll meet for your reveal and ordering appointment, where I’ll guide you through selecting your favorite images and designing custom artwork that fits your home and your heart.

We’ll talk through the options for artwork, albums, and keepsakes

After our call, you’ll receive an email with a link to your Portrait Reveal Gallery, giving you 24 hours to review your images, choose your favorites, and finalize your artwork selections. This limited window encourages you to be fully present with the images—and helps keep your experience focused and intentional.

Once you’ve made your selections, I’ll create your Final Portrait Gallery, which includes:
-
Your purchased high-resolution and web-resolution digital files
-
Access to download your images directly
-
The option to order traditional prints of your purchased images directly from your gallery

Please allow 3–6 weeks for delivery of physical products, as each piece is carefully crafted using professional, heirloom-quality materials.

This is where everything comes together—your memories, your connection, and your dog’s personality, beautifully preserved and ready to be displayed, gifted, and cherished for years to come.

Why heirloom artwork matters
Because your dog’s portrait deserves more than life on a screen.

Digital images are wonderful—they’re easy to share, fun to scroll through, and perfect for keeping memories close at hand. (I love having photos of my own dogs on my phone, too!)

But there’s something truly special about printed artwork.
Imagine seeing your dog’s portrait every day—a beautiful image hanging on the wall, displayed proudly on your desk, or preserved forever in a handcrafted album. These pieces become daily reminders of the love you share and the moments that matter most.

Printed artwork invites you to slow down, reflect, and relive those joyful memories in a way digital files simply can’t.

Artwork Options You’ll Love

Wall Art Collections: Create a stunning gallery on your walls that brings your space—and your dog’s spirit—to life.

Every piece is professionally printed using archival-quality materials—built to last for generations and serve as a lasting tribute to your best friend.

Let’s bring your dog’s story to life, not just in pixels—but in artwork you can touch, see, and smile at every single day.

Shannon, you are amazing at what you do!! This was a first for me and you made everything so easy and comfortable – it was so much fun!! I am beyond thrilled at what you captured with your camera and just love all the beautiful photos of our family! Thank you again for spending so much time with me AND US, through the whole process! YOU ARE WONDERFUL!!!
Stacey

Shannon was so incredible to work with. She clearly communicated each step of the process, was very proactive about reaching out and getting things set up, and was in general exceptionally easy and wonderful to work with. The pictures she took of Lucy were so beautiful that I've already booked her for taking pictures of my horse, and will be booking her to take pictures of my other dog when she's fully grown. Her photos and the photo book I got aren't just fun and cool things to have around, they are keepsakes I will have for the rest of my life and have so much meaning to me. Someday, decades from now, I'll be able to take out the albums from each of my animals and have so many fond and beautiful memories of my pets. I highly recommend working with her if you have the opportunity, you will not regret it.

Shannon was amazing, very professional. She had us relaxed and smiling with her quick wit. She took such beautiful photos! We enjoyed every minute of our session with her and would gladly do it again. We highly recommend her to anyone wanting quality professional photographs. Thank you again Shannon!
